Deployed on the Klingon Border the fleet was considered an elite combat formation during the decade before the General War. Considered to be the fleet most likely to attacked by a foreign invasion, a prediction that proved to be accurate. The Third Fleet was sometimes called "the new elite" since the Fourth Fleet had been the one most involved in combat.
All but destroyed by the orginal Klingon invasion of Y171. The fleet was withdrawn from the front, filled with new ships and was back to full strength by Y174. The fleet then entered the front line between the First and Fourth fleets.[1]
